Day 2: Delhi (B)
After breakfast, explore Delhi, India’s capital city that sports a rich history spanning over 2,000 years. Arrive at old Delhi and ride on a cycle rickshaw (pedi-cabs) to the once water-filled square of Chandni Chowk. Discover the Jama Masjid, Delhi’s oldest mosque, before learning about the history of the Sikh religion at the Sheeshganj Gurudwara. Continue to Raj Ghat, the memorial to Gandhi, built at the site of his cremation on the banks of the Yamuna River. In the afternoon, drive past India Gate and the Government Secretariat buildings on the way to the Qutab Minar – the five-storied victory tower to signify the beginning of the Muslim rule in India by the first Muslim ruler, Qutab-ud-din Aibak.
Day 3: Delhi – Agra (B)
After breakfast, drive to Agra. Once a small village on the banks of the Yamuna, it was transformed by two great Mughal monarchs, Akbar and his grandson Shah Jehan into the second capital of the Mughal Empire. A world of contrasting edifices of red sandstone and white marble, narrow galleys, bustling streets and small buggies, Agra retains the irresistible charm that made this the favorite city of the Mughals. On arrival in the afternoon, enjoy the day at your leisure.
Accommodation: Crystal Sarovar Premiere or similar
Day 4: Agra – Jaipur (B)
Early morning proceed for a Sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal (closed on Friday). It is fitting to see this extraordinary monument by the first light of day as its exemplary beauty is awe-inspiring and will create an unforgettable memory. Mughal emperor, Shahjahan built this architectural wonder to enshrine the mortal remains of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal. Return to the hotel for breakfast, then drive for Jaipur – the 18th century capital of Rajasthan. Stop en route at Abhaneri Village, a popular stop along the Agra-Jaipur road for the impressive Chand Baori stepwell and the Harshat Mata Temple. The Chand Baori is perhaps the region’s most visited stepwell and is one of the largest and deepest in all of India. Continue to Jaipur, reaching in the evening. On arrival, check in for your stay.
Accommodation: Sarovar Premiere or similar
Day 5: Jaipur (B)
After breakfast, take an excursion to Amber Fort. Jaipur’s Maharaja Man Singh, Mughal Emperor Akbar’s most successful General, started constructing Amber Fort in the 17th century. The Fort is surrounded by fortified battlements and overlooks the Moat Lake. Once you are on top, stroll through the sprawling complex of courtyards and halls. Most fascinating, perhaps, is the Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors) where a single lamplight is reflected in the many mirrors, lighting up the room. Take a photo-stop at Hawa Mahal (the Palace of Winds). Five stories in height and built of red and pink sandstone highlighted with white quicklime, it is thought that the women of the royal harem used the many casements to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen.
Later, visit Jantar Mantar, an observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh ll in the 18th century. One of the most remarkable sites in Jaipur, the Jantar Mantar has fourteen major geometric devices for measuring time, predicting eclipses and tracking stars and planets. Continue to the City Palace built within the fortified area of the original city, with one of the finest monumental entrances in India. The Palace is now principally a museum housing a collection of great treasures, including miniature paintings, carpets, royal garments and other interesting objects from Jaipur’s intriguing past. Evening, visit the markets of Jaipur and the downtown area for some shopping time.
